It's only a Paper Moon

It's only a Paper Moon

This song was rescued from a failed Broadway show in the early 1930s - The Great Magoo.  It later appeared under its new current title and, following famous American singer Cliff Edwards recording,  it soon hit the charts.  It was also later recorded by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and quickly established itself as one of the jazz standards.  It was written by one of the great American Songbook composers, Harold Arlen.

The lyrics highlight "the real vs. imagined world as pertaining to life with or without love. The trust and faith that a love relationship confers to one's perception of the authenticity of life have never been elucidated nearly as succinctly, nor with such simple perfection as in this fine example of a Great American Songbook standard." - www.allaboutjazz.com

In this version, recorded in 1945, we hear the inimitable Ella Fitzgerald.
