The original hymn text relates to the Nativity of Jesus and was written by Martin Luther in 1534. The opening verse is:

From heaven to earth I come

To bear good news to every home;

Glad tidings of great joy I bring

Whereof I now will say and sing:

It is a paean of joy and exhilaration , played here on the organ of St Paul's Cathedral, London.
