The original tune to a 13th century spring carol Tempus adest floridum is the one to which the words of Good King Wencelas are set. They tell the story of a legend based on the life of the Bohemian Duke, Saint Wencelas I who is on a journey on St Stephen's Day (26th December) to give alms to the poor. His struggling page is inspired to keep going by following his master's foot prints through the deep snow.
